What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid does not cost you a penny more, but can add an additional 25p to every £1 you donate. When IRCF receives a donation from a UK taxpayer, we're entitled to claim an amount of tax (calculated at the basic rate of income tax in that year) paid on that donation. Once you have given your permission for us to do this on your behalf, there is no need for you to do anything else.

All that is required is that you must be a taxpayer and that would have paid or will pay sufficient Income and/or Capital Gains Tax to cover all the Gift Aid claimed on all your donations in that tax year. Please note that it is your responsibility to pay any difference.

The amount of tax we claim will be 25% of the total value of your donations in that tax year. Furthermore, if you are a higher taxpayer, you are also entitled to claim the difference between the basic rate which we will claim and the amount of tax you have actually paid. For further details on how you can do this, please contact your tax office. If your tax situation changes and your gifts will no longer be eligible for the Gift Aid scheme please contact us and we will amend your record accordingly.

Yes, your cryptocurrency donation is *tax deductible! IRCF offers the ability to give in the form of cryptocurrency in a tax-efficient way. Your contribution is tax-deductible to the fullest extent permitted by UK law.

How many people use cryptocurrency?

In the UK, there are currently about 3.3 million cryptocurrency users, and globally, the number is estimated at over 220 million. The number of cryptocurrency users has increased exponentially from 2017 to 2023.

Can I donate Cryptocurrency?

Yes. Instead of selling your cryptocurrency and donating the after-tax proceeds, you can donate it directly to charities and other nonprofits, which means your tax deduction will be the same as the market value of the donation.

Does HMRC recognise cryptocurrency donations?

Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) recognises cryptocurrencies as assets or property for tax purposes. Cryptocurrency donations to UK registered charities receive the same tax treatment as gifts of stocks and other assets.

How much cryptocurrency is donated each year?

Currently, about £240 million is donated in the form of cryptocurrency globally each year. As the crypto market has grown, so too have cryptocurrency donations.

Why donate cryptocurrency?

When you donate cryptocurrency to a registered charity, you do not need to recognise capital gains from the donation and can deduct the full market value from your taxes. In other words, donating your crypto can often reduce your tax burden. Would you rather donate to HMRC or your favourite cause?

How does IRCF receive cryptocurrency?

We have chosen to use the Engiven platform. Engiven provides cryptocurrency donation technologies for more nonprofits than any other giving platform.

What does The Fellowship do with donated cryptocurrency?

Engiven’s system automates the process of receiving and exchanging crypto donations for pounds sterling. Once a donation is made, Engiven verifies the transaction on the blockchain, immediately converts the crypto assets to pounds sterling, and initiates a deposit to our bank.
